Move into telco sales has paid dividends for AGL Energy

When energy company AGL Energy entered the phone and broadband services market in December 2019 with it’s acquisition of Southern Phone for $27.5m, many in the industry were particularly interested to see how it pan out over the next couple of years.  Last weeks half-year results briefing for AGL Energy confirmed our view that telco services offer an impressive growth opportunity for a number of sales focused organisations particularly those already working with retail utility services.

AGL Energy’s managing director and CEO, Brett Redman reported in it’s half-year results briefing that AGL’s results for the six months to 31 December reveal that the company ended 2020 with some 171,000 broadband and phone services in operation, up 2% from 168,000 six months earlier.

The result comes after the company in November launched AGL-branded broadband services, which was followed earlier this month by the launch of mobile services, thanks to an MVNO deal with Optus.

“We’re delivering strong growth in absolute customer numbers and our strategy of expanding in broadband and mobile will support our objective of increasing services per customer,” Redman said.

With such an impressive results in less than 18 months in the telco space, it’s simple to see the benefits to businesses already selling to customers or providing services in a number of adjacent industries including retail utility services, marketing, business consultancy and IT support and maintenance.
